Description
The New Testament. New York: American Bible Society, 1862. 32mo (2 ¾ x 4 ½ in.) Original rebacked tan cloth with original spine laid down.
Contemporary ink and pencil inscriptions to front read: "Loyd Nichols, U.S. Gen. Hospital, Ward 23, Room 91, Annapolis, MD, June 1862." Also includes Nichols's notes on the New Testament to front and rear fly leaves. Interior board bears a Maryland State Bible Society label.
Nichols enlisted when he was 18 on 26 August 1861 at Black Creek, New York as a sergeant. He was mustered into Company F of the 85th New York Infantry on 7 September. The regiment left New York for Washington D.C. late in 1861 and after defense duty of the capital, participated in the Siege of Yorktown and the Battle of Williamsburg. Nichols, who had been promoted to sergeant on 1 May 1862 was wounded at the Battle of Fair Oaks (Battle of Seven Pines) on 31 May 1862 and was then hospitalized at the U.S. General Hospital in Annapolis, Maryland. It was here that he recorded his ownership of this New Testament. He was discharged for his wounds on 10 August 1862.
Condition: Rebacked, wear to extremities.
