Description
late 19th century, 221 x 140 cm, North West Persia, Kurdistan
ENGELHARDT, EVA, Orientteppiche der Sonderklasse. Heidelberg 1980, ill. p. 8
An antique Bijar woven on a wool warp. The ascending field design of large flowering shrubs on the central axis and two lateral rows of lyre-like floral forms alternating with palmettes is uncharacteristic of Bijar; its style brings to mind Sultanabad carpets. This influence is further supported by the palette of light pastel shades seen in the motifs and the salmon ground colour of the field.
Good condition, the original selvedges survive, both ends minimally reduced.
