Description
Roman, Imperial period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A fun ensemble of Roman figural fibulae: a bronze bird with tucked wings, a copper alloy horse, and a crossbow and bird with spread wings both cast from leaded bronze. Size of largest (crossbow): 1.5" L x 0.9" W x 0.8" H (3.8 cm x 2.3 cm x 2 cm)
Provenance: private Charlotte, North Carolina, USA collection; ex-Joel Malter collection, prior to 2004

Condition
Bird with spread wings: missing pin and part of catch. Bird with tucked wings: missing pin. Horse: Losses to feet, head professionally reattached with break line visible, and modern brass pin professionally attached to verso. Crossbow: intact, but pin is stuck in place inhibiting wear. All have expected surface wear with abrasions as shown. Liberal remaining detail and rich patina throughout.
