Scarce Potts & Hunt Bar on Band 1858 2-Band Army Rifle
Item Details
Description
Potts and Hunt Pattern 1856 Army Rifle known by collectors as the -Bar on Band- rifle, as the saber bayonet lug is mounted on the forward band instead of the barrel itself. . Only a few thousand of these rifles were manufactured. Brass mounted examples are navy models. These steel mounted models are army models and VERY scarce. The lock of the rifle is marked Potts & Hunt forward of the hammer. The rifle retains an original snap cap (nipple protector), secured via the original brass chain and iron split ring. This scarce model has the saber bayonet lug (bar) attached to the upper barrel band and a screw through the upper band extends through the stock. The rear sight is mounted closer to the lower barrel band than on the 3 band rifle musket. Potts and Hunt operated in London and sold Enfields to both the North and the South. They sold large numbers of these short rifles to southern buyers, and I know of no Bar on Bands sold to the North. Back in the 1960s through 1980s it was believed that all Potts & Hunt guns were Confederate. Subsequent research proved otherwise. The metal is a smooth grey patina. The barrel proof marks are clearly visible. The triggerguard , buttplate and nosecap are steel. The stock is solid and full length.

Overall NRA -Very Good condition. 100% original, 100% complete, and mechanically perfect. Wood is very good like a well cared for piece of family heirloom furniture. There is a small piece of wood professionally replaced on the right of the barrel tang to the lock. Metal is steel grey with good markings. No finish remains.
