Description
deep matt green glaze with carved linear decor, artist signed McJ, 6 3/4" tall, couple flakes............William Henry Grueby (1867-1925) began his pottery career at Low Art and Tile Works (1880-1890). After leaving Low, he worked as an independent potter. Grueby along with C. P. Kendrick and W. H. Graves founded the Grueby Faience Company in 1894. He was inspired by French matte glazes and the simplicity of Japanese ceramics he saw during a visit to the 1893 World’s Columbian Exhibition in Chicago. Initially, the company made architectural terra cotta, glazed bricks, and tiles.Grueby matte green cabinet vase ruthGrueby Pottery - HistoryIn 1897, Grueby Faience began making art pottery vases. Designer Prentiss Kendrick created the shapes. Grueby developed matte glazes, including the company’s cucumber green. Grueby won medals at the 1900 Paris International Exposition, the 1901 Pan-American Exposition (Buffalo), the 1901 St. Petersburgh Exposition of Ceramics, and the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition (St. Louis). Among the famous architects and designers working for Grueby were Henry Belknap, Ruth Erickson, WilliamGraves, Karl Langenbeck, and Addison LeBoutillier. Grueby supplied lamp bases and other products to Tiffany. Gustav Stickley used Grueby tiles in his furniture. Samuel Bing sold his products in Paris. In 1907, the Grueby Pottery company was incorporated in Massachusetts. Grueby produced art pottery until 1909 (some accounts suggest 1911), when the company went bankrupt. In 1909, The Grueby Fiance and Tile Company was incorporated. Emerging from bankruptcy, it mass-produced pottery, statues, and tiles. Grueby rebuilt after a 1913 fire in the production facility. The C. Pardee Works, Perth Amboy, New Jersey, bought the Grueby factory in 1917. It closed for the final time in 1920.
