Description
1652 CROMWELL 1ed John Bridges Humble Petition Parliament Richard Baxter England
In mid-17th-century England, Colonel John Bridges, a Cromwell apologist, purchased property in Kidderminster, England where he became acquainted with Richard Baxter. Baxter, one of Englands most notable nonconformists, urged Bridges and Thomas Foly to present to Parliament a petition responding to a proposal which would abolish tithes. According to Hardacre,
“The petition emphasized the need for an able and learned ministry, and urged the augmentation of underpaid livings. It went on to recommend further discussion of the question of church government by an assembly of divines.”
This petition was delivered in December of 1652 and printed the same year. This short, but substantial first edition printing of Bridges “Humble Petition” was published in London by White, Tyton, and Underhill.
