Exceedingly Rare Lyndon B. Johnson Presidential Appointment
Partly Printed Document Signed “Lyndon B. Johnson” as President, 1 page, 23” x 18.75”. Mounted on quality rigid poster board of the same size. Blind-embossed 3.5”-diameter U.S. Seal affixed at lower left. Countersigned “George W. Ball” as Acting Secretary of State. Fine condition.
In part, “Know Ye, that reposing special trust and confidence in the Integrity and Ability of William H. Perkins, Jr., of Illinois, I do appoint him a Member of the Armed Forces Museum Advisory Board of the Smithsonian Institution for a term of six years …” He was reappointed by Presidents Richard Nixon, Gerald R. Ford, Jimmy Carter, and Ronald Reagan.
William H. Perkins, Jr. (1922-2009) had served on the 1961 and 1965 Presidential Inaugural Committees. He was a lifelong lobbyist, first for the Continental Casualty Company where he arranged the insurance coverage for President Kennedy’s inauguration.
Authentically signed Lyndon B. Johnson presidential appointments are exceedingly rare. In the last 45 years, only six have appeared at major public auctions and three of the six were from the Estate of Arthur J. Goldberg referring to U.N. appointments. Of these six documents, we are not certain how many we would feel are not authentically signed.
This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
