Roald Engelbregt Gravning Amundsen (1872-1928) was a Norwegian explorer and a key figure during the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration. His first polar trek occurred in 1897 when he joined the Belgian Antarctic Expedition at the age of 25. He would later go on to successfully traverse the Northwest Passage, explore the South Pole, and navigate the North Pole and Northeast Passage. On June 18, 1928, three years after this photograph was taken, Amundsen disappeared during a rescue mission in the Arctic. He and his team had been searching for the airship "Italia", which had crashed on its return from the North Pole. He and his crew were never found, but parts of his flying boat, the Lantham 47, were later found near the Tromso coast, and it is believed the plane had crashed into the Barents Sea.
