Paul L. Robeson (1898-1976) was an American bass-baritone concert artist, stage and film actor, professional football player, and activist who became famous both for his cultural accomplishments and for his political stances. He has been honored for his achievements in sport and culture, and many public and private establishments he was associated with have been landmarked, or named after him. In 1945, Robeson received the Spingarn medal from the NAACP. In 1995, he was named to the College Football Hall of Fame. In 2004, the U.S. Postal Service issued a 37-cent stamp honoring Robeson.
