Eleven days prior to delivering the Gettysburg Address, Lincoln sat for a series of photographs by Gardner (1821-1883). This one clearly shows his Roving left eye, giving an intimate touch to this dramatic photo. Lincoln 's secretary, John Hay, later wrote in his diary that we had a great many pictures taken…
