Description
A very rare partly-printed D.S. 1p. folio, Berlin, Apr. 25, 1919, a ‘Foreign Office’ pass permitting German diplomat Lothar Klaus to go to Versailles and back, with the instruction to turn in the document immediately upon his return to Germany. Bears Klaus’ passport photo, French arrival stamp dated Versailles, Apr. 28, 1919, and departure stamp dated June 6, 1919, both of which are signed by Col. [?] HENRY, head of the liaison group for the German delegation at Versailles. Neatly folded and mounted into a small folder and in fine condition. Of particular note in the Treaty of Versailles was the controversial clause requiring Germany to disarm and pay reparations in the amount of some $33 billion dollars. Scholars and historians alike have debated whether this punishment was ‘just deserts’ or too harsh, but the ensuing consequences, both in terms of economics and German humiliation, would bankrupt the country and set the stage for Hitler’s rise to power less than a decade later.
