Description
[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY]. Sixth plate daguerreotype of a gentleman armed with a flintlock pistol.Seated portrait of a young civilian wearing a non-military double-breasted frock coat and holding a flintlock pistol, likely a Model 1805 Flintlock. (Some splotches of light clouding/fading throughout, with occasional spotting to plate, significant spotting to mat; resealed.) Housed in a mismatched leatherette case (separate covers do not match, front cover with significant loss). The firearm featured here can be characterized by its long metal ears extending up from either side of the base of the grip, its long length, and a small bead front sight at the end of the barrel. The closest match that could be ascertained for this weapon is the Model 1805 Flintlock pistol produced at the Harpers Ferry Arsenal between 1806-1808. When made, this model did not have a front bead sight, so it is possible the sight on the pistol featured here was added some time later. This lot is located in Cincinnati.Early Photography Collection of Jules Martino, Silverton, Oregon
