Description
Alfred Leslie Abstract Expressionist Oil and Collage on Board Painting, signed and dated 1959
Signed Alfred Leslie (1927-2023) Oil and Collage on Board Painting. Alfred Leslie was an American painter and filmmaker. He first achieved success as an Abstract Expressionist painter, his works are held in many prestigious museum collections

Alfred Leslie was an influential American artist primarily known for his contributions to the Abstract Expressionist movement and later, for his realist portraits. Born in the Bronx, New York City, Leslie initially rose to prominence in the 1950s alongside contemporaries such as Joan Mitchell, Willem de Kooning, and Franz Kline.

In the early years of his career, Leslie's large-scale, brushy abstract paintings were celebrated for their dynamism and depth of emotion. However, in a dramatic shift in the mid-1960s, he turned to photorealistic painting, meticulously capturing intricate details and presenting subjects with lifelike precision. This drastic shift from abstract to representational art marked one of the most surprising turns in the art world during the 20th century.

Beyond painting, Leslie is also known for his ventures in the world of film. In collaboration with photographer Robert Frank, he co-created the iconic 1959 Beat film "Pull My Daisy," which starred Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, and other key figures from the Beat Generation. The film is celebrated for its spontaneous and improvisational nature, reflective of the beatnik ethos.

Leslie's multifaceted career has made him a significant figure in the history of post-war American art. Whether through his abstract canvases, his detailed portraiture, or his experimental films, Leslie has consistently pushed boundaries, exploring new mediums and techniques while challenging conventions.
