MARK TWAIN FIRST EDITION AND EARLY PRINTING VOLUMES, LOT OF FIVE, comprising (1) Mark Twain, Roughing It, Hartford, CT: American Publishing Company, 1872; (2) Mark Twain, A Tramp Abroad, Hartford, CT: American Publishing Company, 1880; (3) Mark Twain, The Innocents Abroad, or The New Pilgrims' Progress, Hartford, CT: American Publishing Company, 1869; (4) Mark Twain, Mark Twain's Sketches, New and Old, Hartford, CT: American Publishing Company, 1880; and (5) Mark Twain's Speeches with an Introduction by William Dean Howells, New York: Harper & Brothers Publishers, 1910. Roughing It is a first edition with the following first issue points: p. 242 lines 20-21 with "he" and "his" present, p. 156 with a capital "T" for Trees and "thirteenth" instead of "sixteenth", and p. 330 line 23 with "Eastern" capitalized. Tramp Abroad may be a first edition, second state: the frontispiece is captioned "Titian's Moses". (1-3) bound in half red leather, with four raised bands and gilt-stamped titles on spines; (4) bound in blue cloth, with embossed black and gold text and designs on covers and spine. (1-4) with engraved illustrations throughout text and with top corners of title pages signed in pencil by previous owner William Woodwell. (5) is bound in red cloth with embossed design on covers and gilt-stamped front cover and spine, and "Arthur Webster" bookplate inside front cover.

Condition

(1) Roughing It missing most of p. 39, missing lower corner of p. 25, with a tear in p. 122, pp. 590-591 with yellowing from newspaper cutting, many interior pages with creases, foxing, or toning, and several pages with smudges or fingerprints in margins. (2) Tramp Abroad interior pages with slight foxing to frontispiece illustration, slight toning to margins throughout, and a few pages with smudges in margins. (3) Innocents Abroad with pp. 28-29 yellowed from Twain-related newspaper clipping, some foxing and slight page-turn creases throughout interior, and several pages with smudges or fingerprints in margins. These three volumes all with significant fading and some cracks to spine, along with wear to covers. (4) Sketches with wear to spine, loose binding, smudges or staining to margins of a few pages, and wear to page edges. (5) Speeches in very good condition with some wear to page edges.
