Item Details
Description
Being an important unsigned graphite notes by Sen. Kennedy on his official United States Senate letterhead. JFK writes, What do we need to secure Jewish vote? Call Arthur Goldberg for advice ? he?ll be in New York tomorrow. Kennedy then doodles what appear to be nine rectangles. Below those he writes and triple-underlines the year 1947, then jots the words Israel?s war of Independence. To the left of that, he notes, Talk with him personally.

After being discharged from the Navy, Kennedy worked as a journalist for the Chicago Herald-American and the International News Service. In the aforementioned notes he recalled the United Nations? 1947 Partition Plan for Palestine which would divide Palestine into an Arab state and Jewish state. Further violence eventually led to the 1948-1949 Arab-Israeli War. Israel?s victory ultimately resulted in its keeping the majority of the area allotted in the Partition Plan.

As a U.S. senator, Kennedy worked diligently with key Democrats in pursuit of his party?s 1960 nomination. His desire to meet with Arthur Goldberg about the presidential campaign was a strategic move to secure a strong Jewish voter turnout. As president, an appreciative JFK appointed Goldberg secretary of labor and, later, to the United States Supreme Court.

Provenance: comes from the John Burke Jovich collection. World-renowned US Presidential Historian.
JFK's personal secretary during his senatorial and White House years, Evelyn Lincoln, was a dear friend of mine. She frequently reminded Kennedy to pass on his doodles and notes, all unofficial documents, to his friend Congressman Mike Kirwan. Evelyn and her husband Abe (Harold) Lincoln, reviewed every one of JFK's doodles in my Kirwan collection during my visit at their Chevy Chase, MD home back in the early 1990s. She never questioned their authenticity, and her vivid memory of Kennedy scrawling some of the documents brought tears to her eyes. Evelyn was the expert at deciphering the late president's difficult to read handwriting
