Description
Spanish school, second half of the 19th century.
"Street musicians".
Oil on canvas.
Re-framed.
Frame ca. 1900.
It presents some faults.
Size: 108 x 91 cm; 130 x 112 cm (frame).
The social realism, a pictorial genre committed to the humblest classes, knew a great boom in the middle of the 19th century. In this painting, on the other hand, the influence of French artists (Millet, Courbet, Daumier, etc.) rather than the Baroque masters of the Sevillian school, especially Murillo, is the basis for its affiliation with this trend. The present painter seems to have been inspired by his ragged boys. One of them begs alms with bare feet. The other, probably blind, carries a guitar to attract attention with his strumming.
