Fascinating biography of Emerson published just after his death by Virginia-born Conway, a preacher and radical writer deeply influenced by Transcendentalism, who began a long friendship with Emerson while attending Harvard Divinity School in 1853-54. Conway was perhaps the South's most prominent abolitionist, and spent most of his career exiled in the safety of the North or as an expatriate in England and France.
