Description
A well carved ancient stele. From the friend of the gallery we consulted " ...an excellent example of a low relief stele from Mesopotamia, probably dating from the 3rd millennium BC. The material appears to be alabaster or limestone. It was probably made to commemorate an event, or a transaction (land or other property). The fact that it is intact makes it particularly appealing.". The top panel shows two men, one of whom is holding a rod. Bottom panel shows a man with 2 pigs. On the reverse, the top panel shows 3 animals, along with a flower (?), while the lower panel shows what appears to be cuneiform script. From a New Rochelle, NY collection. - Dimensions: 9" h x 4 7/8" w x 3/4" d.
