Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, north coast of Peru, Moche, Phase IV or V, ca. 500 to 800 CE. A fantastical pottery stirrup vessel in the form of a seated shaman in the process of transforming into a bird. The figure is seated with arms and legs folded with a prominent beak. The rest of his body is cloaked in a robe, in profile the vessel resembles a bird with a short tail. Birds communicated with the celestial gods because of the ease with which they could fly between the earth, sea, and sky, making them a powerful symbol for shamans to transform into. The large circular face markings and framed head may represent the "facial ruff" of an owl. The owl was revered for its special characteristics that were associated with the underworld; nocturnal hunters with silent flight feathers, strong talons, and uncanny ability to rotate its head 180 degrees. Size: 5" L x 3.5" W x 7" H (12.7 cm x 8.9 cm x 17.8 cm)

Provenance: private Ferndale, Michigan, USA collection; ex-private Detroit, Michigan, USA collection, acquired prior to 2004
