Pre-Columbian, Colombia, Tairona, ca. 1000 to 1500 CE. A hand-carved red jasper spoon utensil used for the preparation and enhancement of hallucinogenic properties in coca leaves. The spoon has a carved-out scoop with a pair of perforated suspension holes, and an elongated body like a shell spire. The lime needed to activate the coca may have come from seashells, hence the symbolic spiraling of this jasper stone. The scooped-out receptacle at one end for grinding lime powder to mix with coca leaves before consuming. Coca chewing was not only for religious rituals and inducing trance like states, but as a stimulant for relieving discomfort while working, suppressing fatigue, altitude sickness, hunger, and thirst - its use was widespread amongst marching soldiers and laborers.
