"Bust of a Young Woman with Scarf on Her Head", by Ernest Patris, terracotta sculpture on granite stone pedestal; signed in sculpting material "Patris," two original labels of De Bacher-Van Camp are attached to the pedestal, 1940s.

The sculpture including pedestal is c.11.1/2" [29cm]; c.5" x 3.1/4" [12.6cm x 8.5cm]; artificial 'bronze' green patina, unpolished heavy granite pedestal, very good condition.

Ernest Patris (1909-1981) was a Belgian expressionist painter, ceramist and sculptor of busts, portraits, heads, figures and monuments. Patris attended the Gilly Vocational School to learn to work with bronze and at the Ghent Academy to study anatomy. Mentored by James Ensor, an important Belgian expressionist and surrealist painter of the time, Patris devoted himself entirely to sculpture. Later in life, he established a ceramic workshop, then started a bronze factory, after he operated a gallery and continued to do public commissions until he died in 1981.

Former De Backer-Van Camp Crystal Factory, 73 Rue Royale, Bruxelles is a historical Renaissance era building in the center of Brussels, Belgium. The ground floor was re-designed as a store / gallery in 1896. The Backer-Van Camp, Brussels was specialized on fine European porcelain, glass and small art (the company was in business until late 1950s).
