Oil on canvas, framed. Attributed to Birger Sandzen (1871 - 1954). The painting is a landscape of a lake with mountains in the background. The colors are vibrant and the brushstrokes are bold. Signed "Birger Sandzen" to the bottom right corner. Two label's on verso reads "Smalley's". Painting: 20 x 31.5 inches. Framed: 27.5 x 39 inches. Birger Sandzen was a Swedish-American artist known for his landscapes and use of color. His style is post-impressionism, which is characterized by the use of vivid colors, thick brushstrokes, and the depiction of light and movement. His mature work used thick applications of bold color and was compared in style to that of Vincent van Gogh and the Fauvist painters Paul Cézanne and Henri Matisse. His works can be found in every major Kansas art museum, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts in Santa Fe, the Library of Congress, the Chicago Art Institute, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the National Museum of Stockholm.
