Description: 4 pp. 24.3x38 cm (9¾x15“), folded. December 26, 1850.A husband down on his luck writes his wife about his travails in the early days of the California Gold Rush, advising her to sell off the furniture if necessary to make ends meet, as the previous season seeking a fortune in gold in California had not been successful. By the time he wrote this letter, he had not even been gone a year and had succumbed to scurvy, lost a once-sober friend to alcoholism, and found himself penniless in San Francisco. Nevertheless, he is determined to spend one more season attempting to strike it rich, but is prepared to return and spend out the rest of his days in his trade as a mason, if necessary.
