Item Details
Description
Classic Joan Miro design vase, there is a white clay spot on the bottom typical for Artigas marking, additional signed in clay letters "C" and "G" -- a typical signature mark by Joan Gardy Artigas.
The vase comes from local estate auction. The authenticity is not documented.

This small vase is a complex elaborate artwork: the brown lines of the design are drawn deepened into wet un-fired clay, the segments between the lines are filed with color glazes. The entire vase is over-coated with additional clear glaze.

The vase is 5.1/4" [13.3cm] tall, c.3" [7.6cm] at the widest; 1.1/4" [4.5cm] across at the bottom and c.1.3/8" [c.4cm] across at the top, fine condition.

Joan Gardy Artigas (born 1938) is a Catalan ceramist, artist and was a close collaborator with Joan Miro.

Artigas was born in Boulogne-Billancourt (near Paris). His father was Josep Llorens Artigas who worked closely with Miro and Pablo Picasso, because of this relationship Artigas, still a teenager, was able to work for Miro. Artigas trained at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris where he met the Swiss sculptor Alberto Giacometti. Artigas established his own studio where at Giacometti's suggestion he concentrated on sculpture. Artigas had some success and supplied his expertise to the cubists Georges Braque and Marc Chagall.Artigas created the 7,200 tiles for the Miro Wall. He coloured the tiles based on an image which Miro had created. The artwork includes the signatures of both artists. Artigas' signature is dated 1979. When his father retired, Artigas returned to assist Miro.

Artigas continued his own art and he was awarded his first solo exhibition in America in 1982. He has been a visiting artist at two American universities and he has founded a foundation to celebrate his father's work. Gardy-Artigas serves on the board of the foundation Fundacia Joan Miro in Barcelona.
