BEAN, Edwin F. - Nevada City: Printed at the Daily Gazette Book and Job Office, 1867. vi, [6], [2, blank], 424 pp., 1 leaf of inserted ads (pp. 184-185), pp. 409-424 on colored paper; printed pastedowns. 8vo, 8?x5?, original black gilt-lettered leather over blue pictorial boards printed in red and black (skillfully rebacked, original spine laid down and missing about one-half to one inch at extremities). Boards spotted and rubbed, a few scattered stains. A very good copy. Inscribed at the top of the front cover is [x=#8220/]R. J. Fitzgerald, Grass Valley, ...[x=#8221/]. This copy does not have the small ad after p. vi, which, according to Quebedeaux, did not appear in all copies. Perhaps the most famous of the Nevada County directories, notable for the extended histories of the various settlements and the numerous advertisements in addition to the directory listings themselves. Quebedeaux notes it as the "first Nevada County directory; first history of county as a whole; first book printed in the county... Edward F. Bean was Nevada County assessor and editor and publisher of the Daily Gazette in Nevada City. His history and directory is, by far, the best-known of all California directories. The first section lists State and Judicial Officers, Post Offices and Quartz Mining Laws. This is followed by a historical sketch of the County, including much on Mines, (Placer and Quartz) and the Canals and Ditches associated with placer operations. The next section focuses on the Nevada City Township and includes on pp. 108-133 details of the local mines. After a historical sketch of Grass Valley another section details the Mines and Mills of this township on pp. 201-232 is followed by an article, [x=#8220/]Notes on the Grass Valley District on the Geological and Quartz Mining by the well-known mining expert of the day, Professor Benjamin Sillman. This is a substantial essay given over to mining gold from quartz deposits, which, as the author notes, has been the subject of numerous false starts. Similar sections follow on each of the townships of Meadow Lake, Bridgeport, Rough and Ready, Little York, Washington, Bloomfield and Eureka. Each section has an alphabetical list of residents in each township as well as advertisements of local businesses. Edward F. Bean was Nevada County assessor and editor and publisher of the Daily Gazette in Nevada City. His history and directory is, by far, the best-known of all California directories. One of the great 'standard' county histories, it is, in the minds of many collectors, dealers, historians and libraries, one of the most valuable - content-wise - of all directories published in the United States."
