This antique map presents a detailed plan of St. Julian's Harbor in Patagonia, Argentina, meticulously documented by the English pirate G. Anson in 1756. It offers the most comprehensive depiction of the harbor to date, highlighting specific areas where salt was acquired. St. Julian's served as a crucial stopping point before embarking south towards the Strait of Magellan. Anson's remarkable work, "A Voyage Round the World", stands as one of the greatest firsthand accounts of global voyages, adventure, and piracy from the age of exploration. Published in London in 1756, this edition chronicles Anson's audacious mission to attack Spanish territories in western South America and seize their valuable treasure galleons. The consequences of his actions were severe, as capture by the Spanish would have led to a conviction for piracy and the execution of him and his crew. Undertaking this daring and perilous expedition, Anson endured significant challenges and losses, with over two-thirds of his crew and three of his eight ships falling victim along the way. Nonetheless, his squadron set sail in 1740 and returned in 1744 aboard his flagship, the Centurion, with a mere 125 men who successfully completed a remarkable circumnavigation of the globe. The culmination of Anson's relentless efforts occurred in 1743 when he captured the larger and better-armed Spanish treasure galleon, "Nuestra Se?ora de Cobadonga" off Cape Espiritu Santo, Samar Island, Philippines. This triumphant achievement not only secured his promotion to Lord of the British Crown but also established him as one of the top English commanders during the Seven Years' War. This copperplate engraved map is in very good condition, with the right side trimmed close. It measures approximately 8 1/2" x 11" and comes with a guarantee of authenticity.
