Description
Nineteenth-century Spanish school.
"Still-life with flowers and fruit".
Oil on canvas.
Measures: 101 x 61 cm; 118 x 78 cm (frame).
The present floral and fruit still-life is characterised by the predominance of somewhat brownish and earthy tones, as well as by the great variety of flowers and fruit displayed in the vases.
The tenebrist lighting brings the work closer to the influence of the purest Baroque. The composition is also classicist, with the elements in the foreground within a harmonious, symmetrical triangular composition.
A still life or still life usually depicts inanimate objects, and this genre of painting is found in Ancient Egypt and in Greece and Rome. They would make a strong comeback in the Renaissance, thanks, above all, to Northern European painting and its use of oil paint. This technique allowed a much more realistic painting. In these early times, still lifes had a strong religious symbolic content, expressed by the objects they depicted. From the 15th century, with Leonardo da Vinci, Albrecht Dürer, etc., this Christian meaning began to be abandoned, and from the 16th century, interest in still life painting increased until it became a genre in its own right.
