Description
Dimensions: 7 x 5 cm (approx. 2.76 x 1.97 inches)
A splendid example of Seljuk metalwork, this brass oil lamp is shaped like a bird, a design that was popular during the Seljuk Dynasty, which spanned from 1037 to 1194 AD. The lamp's detailed etchings and form indicate it was not only a functional item but also a decorative one, likely illuminating the homes of the affluent or used in religious ceremonies.
Acquired from a British collection in the 1980s, this piece was previously owned by Mr. P.R., an avid collector of Islamic art. It has been in a private collection in Marseille, France, since 2005.
