Description
Northern Italy, Etruscan, ca. 3rd century BCE. Large wine storage and mixing vessel copied from the more popular and definitely more refined Greek regions to the south. In the 4th and 3rd centuries BCE the Etruscans were fighting for trade and liberally copied Greek styles. In fact, more Greek Attic (Athenian) pottery has been found in Etruscan tombs than in Greek tombs. This interesting example features two main scenes, one to each side. Side A features a naked male youth holding a cornucopia in his right hand, fillet in his left. He is flanked by large palmettes. Side B shows a similar scene with the nude you holding fillets in each hand. Similar palmettes flank the youth with additional palmette under each handle. Size: 10.5" W x 12.5" H (26.7 cm x 31.8 cm)
