Item Details
Description
Jacob B. Lewis (First Nations Canadian, Salish, b. 1955) "Sun Carriers." A gorgeous yellow cedar carving of a sun crest figure inlaid with shimmering nacre shells. The anthropomorphic sun face is surrounded by formline carvings highlighted in red, green, and black that form interlocking birds - their wing feathers hold additional abstract faces. Lewis's sun discs often contain stories and myths from his culture, here the title "Sun Carriers" refers to a story that involves Raven stealing the sun, moon, and stars from Eagle, and gives these celestial bodies to the rest of the world. Jacob Lewis is a master carver of the Squamish tribe and Coast Salish Nation. Size: 11" Diameter (27.9 cm)

Provenance: private Thornton, Colorado, USA collection
