autograph document signed ("R.B. Taney") by Robert B. TANEY (1777-1864), Chief Justice of the US Supreme Court best known for his opinion in the 1857 Dred Scott case; autograph letter signed ("S.T. Wallis") by Severn Teackle WALLIS (1816-1894), Maryland lawyer arrested on Lincoln's orders at the outset of the war and held without formal charges for 14 months; calling card signed ("Cl. O'Conor") by Charles O'CONOR (1804-1884), Copperhead attorney who was senior counsel to Jefferson Davis following Davis's arrest; autograph letter signed ("W. M. Gwin") by William M. GWIN (1805-1885), pro-slavery California Senator who plotted to align California with the Confederacy; autograph letter signed ("J.D. Bright") by Jesse D. BRIGHT (1812-1875), pro-slavery US Senator from Indiana who was expelled from the Senate for treason; and document signed ("W Trenholm") by William TRENHOLM (1836-1901), Confederate soldier who served as commander of the South Carolina Rutledge Rifles and 8th Battalion of the South Carolina Cavalry; and autograph letter signed ("HE Young") by Henry E. YOUNG (1831-1918), who served on the staff of Gen. Robert E. Lee as Judge Advocate of the Army of Northern Virginia.

Ticknor Curtis") by George Ticknor CURTIS (1812-1894), attorney who served as co-counsel, along with Montgomery Blair, for Dred Scott during the Dred Scott Case, 1846-1857, and was forced to return fugitive slave Thomas Sims back to bondage in 1851 in compliance with the Fugitive Slave Law.
