Description
EDITH HEAD
Original costume design for a gold gown worn by Grace Kelly in Alfred Hitchcock's To Catch a Thief. Pencil and gouache sketch on paper with added gold paint. Unsigned. The sheet measures 17 1/8 x 13 7/8 inches (43.75 x 35.5 cm). Framed. Faint rippling and creasing, a softened corner at lower left, top edge somewhat irregular with tiny losses at corners, retaining horizontal perforated line along top, thus fine overall with signs of handling and removal from a notebook.
A sketch by Edith Head of one of her most iconic costume designs - Grace Kelly in her spectacular gold lamé gown at the Bal de Biarritz, one of the most impressive scenes in Hitchcock's classic 1955 romantic thriller To Catch a Thief. Head later recalled, "when people ask me who my favorite actress is, who my favorite actor is, and what my favorite film is, I tell them to watch To Catch a Thief and they’ll get all the answers. The film was a costume designer’s dream" (DeRosa, Steven. Hitchcock/Truffaut, Writing with Hitchcock, p. 112). Head was nominated for an Oscar for her work on the film.
