Albumen prints are characterized by smooth wide tonal range, rich, sharp detail, semi-gloss images. The process involves coating the surface of very thin paper with albumen (egg white) and a solution of silver nitrate. This paper was typically so thin it had to be mounted to board or card stock providing added greater print stability. Albumen prints were the most common type of photographic print made during the nineteenth century.
