  • Date/Period: Mid 20th century
  • Dimension: 146x97,50 cm.

  • Provenance: Cloth from the nomadic Burmese tribe, decorated with a sequential bead patternof «Tears of Job». Job's tears (Coix lacryma-jobi), which represent the tears shed by the biblical Job during all the suffering he faced, put to the test in a battle between God and the Devil, are grains native to Southeast Asia and introduced to northern China and in India in remote antiquity, later cultivated in the southern United States and in the tropics of the New World. It is grown in higher altitude areas where rice and maize do not grow well. Job's tears are also commonly sold as Chinese pearl barley. There are two main varieties of the species, one wild and one cultivated. The wild variety, Coix lacryma-jobi var, are very hard, pearly white oval structures. The seeds are naturally pierced without the need to do so artificially. Threads of Job's tears are used as Buddhist prayer beads in parts of India, Burma, Laos, Taiwan and Korea; are turned into rosaries in countries like the Philippines and Bolivia. Rarer are the cloths that use them.
