Description
JAPANESE HANIWA CLAY SCULPTURE OF SHRINE ATTENDANT, 3rd-7th century. Fired clay hand-made hollow figure of shrine attendant. Face consists of three slit-type openings for eyes and mouth; nose, forehead and ears simply modelled, bearing truncated jar on its head. Gender identification is difficult given that male and female haniwa have similar faces; this is likely a female haniwa as hair is in ponytail on top of head and wearing beaded necklace. - Height: 10.75 inches.
