Description
Majolica earthenware plate by designed by Carl Paul Börner (1828-1905) and manufactured by Herman Robert Bichweiler in Hamburg Germany c.1880. Design shows a mounted crossbowman (cranequinier) on a red-orange field with a quarrel in his hat. A variant of this resides in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London; the V&A describes the context as “Bichweiler, a designer and architect, established 'Die Kunstgewerbliche Werkstatt' in partnership with Dr. E. Berlieu in 1878 in Hamburg. Carl Paul Börner (1828-1905), an architect, was employed as one of the principal artists. They specialised in a form of majolica using transparent glazes on deeply modelled forms. Within a few years the company was awarded prizes at Melbourne (1880), Frankfurt (1881) and Hamburg (1889) for its ceramics and also began manufacturing glass, metal and leather wares.” The plate has two very small nicks at the inner rim (at 3 and 9 o’clock), and surface chips on the top of the elbow of the crossbowman and the horse’s loin strap. The reverse is marked “R. Bichweiler Hamburg” and “63” Overall in very good condition
