Description
Pre-Columbian, Central America, Costa Rica, ca. 500 to 1000 CE. A wonderful pendant in the form of 2 abstract crocodiles, hand-carved from omphacite jade. Nearly symmetrical, the reptiles face in opposite directions, each presenting a prominent snout, gritted teeth, and bent legs. A loophole rises from the top of the rectangular ornament, doubling as a tail for both creatures, while a drill hole in one alligator's mouth as an alternative means of suspension. Between the 2 animals there appears to be a minimalist, anthropomorphic figure, almost resembling an axe god. In Ancient Cost Rica, the crocodile was understood as an earth monster and is oftentimes shown giving rise to what was known as the World Tree. Partial to a watery habitat, the crocodile was additionally a symbol of fertility. Size: 3.3" L x 1" W (8.4 cm x 2.5 cm)
Jade was regarded as a sacred material by the ancient peoples of Costa Rica, believe it or not, held in higher esteem than gold. The indigenous believed that jade symbolized a vital life force that sustains us all, as the color green connotes that of verdant plant life. Even more specifically, jade was believed to symbolize the growing maize plant, a staple of the Pre-Columbian diet. Scholars have also suggested that jade signified water. Regardless of which meaning one subscribes to, it seems clear that jade represented the absolute essence of life itself in the Pre-Columbian world.
