Artist: Thomas Handforth (1897-1948)
Etching, undated.

Moros y Cristianos (translating to Moors and Christians) is a long standing Spanish festival in which locals dress up as either Christian Spaniards or Moors (Muslims) and reenact battles from the period known as the Reconquista (8-15th century). The festivities attract great crowds every year.
Spain's global conquest following the discovery of the New World in 1492 led to the tradition being brought to its colonies and territories, particularly Spanish America and the Philippines. This etching shows the festival in Mexico.
Thomas Handforth was an American artist, born in Tacoma, Washington. He studied art both in the U.S. and Paris, France. Handforth spent some time in China during the 1930s, which heavily influenced his art. During his time in Pecking (now Beijing) he wrote and illustrated a book called "Mei Li", which received the Caldecott Medal in 1939.
