Description
Northwestern Europe, England, Birmingham, ca. 1813 CE. A fine bronze commemorative token coin with an engrailed edge. Obverse: bust of the Duke of Wellington facing left surrounded by script "VIMIERA TALAVERA BUSACO BADAJOZ SALAMANCA," names of campaigns / battles in the Peninsular War. Reverse: mounted Cossack holding lance, riding to right on grass, "COSSACK PENNY TOKEN." This token was struck in 1813 after the visit of Russian Cossack Alexander Wittischendst, a soldier and war hero, and to celebrate Napoleon?s retreat due to the efforts of the Cossack brigades. Most Cossack tokens were struck in England and brought overseas to colonies, such as Canada, where they were widely circulated. Size: 1.33" Diameter (3.4 cm); weight: 18.2 grams
