Description
Thomas Campbell (Tennessee, 1834-1914) oil on composition board East Tennessee landscape painting depicting cattle grazing in a meadow with a grove of trees and a split rail fence right foreground and haystacks and additional trees in the left background. Unsigned. Housed in an older carved gilt frame with carved gilt fillet. Label en verso dated 1991, detailing the cleaning of this painting and touch-ups to the frame. Sight: 3 5/8" H x 9 3/4" W. Framed: 8" H x 14" W. Biography: Painting was a second career for Thomas Campbell, who immigrated to the United States at age 19, and was ordained as a minister in 1866. He and his family moved to East Tennessee in hopes a climate change would improve the health of his wife, Susan, but she died in 1892. At that point, Campbell retired from the ministry and turned art, which had been his hobby, into his job. He founded the art department at Maryville College in 1902 and headed it until his death. His paintings were exhibited regionally and won several prizes and medals. He was also active in the Nicholson Art League and was a talented wood carver who produced picture frames and small pieces of furniture.
Condition
Very slight pinprick loss, lower left margin. The painting was cleaned in 1991 by Andrew Hurst. Label en verso detailing cleaning. UV light photos available. Overall very good condition with a minute orange peel texture throughout, typical of several of Campbell's other known works.
