Description
Karl Prantl (Austrian, 1923-2010), 1957 meditation sculpture of rectangular form with circular indentions of graduated depths. Signed with incised dot form initials and dated to underside "KP 57". Measures 7 5/8"H x 2 7/8"W x 2 3/8"D (19.8 cm x 7.7 cm x 5.8 cm). Note: according to the artist's daughter, this sculpture was exhibited at the Erker Galerie, St. Gallen, Switzerland, September 13-November 1, 1980. Biography: Karl Prantl is among Austria's most significant sculptors of the Second Republic. He initially studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts before turning to sculpture. In the winter of 1950/51, Prantl created his first sculptures, primarily in limewood. In 1958 he began work at the St. Margarethen stone quarry near the Austria-Hungary border. In the following year he organized the first International Sculptors' Symposium, which represents a vital contribution to the renaissance of stone sculpture and through which Prantl achieved worldwide recognition.
