Item Details
Description
1st Item: Warm-toned silver gelatin print on paper of Michael Miley's photograph of Civil War Confederate General Robert E. Lee's funeral on October 15th, 1870. This "uncropped" version shows mourners gathering beside College Chapel (Lee Chapel) on the campus of Lexington, VA's Washington College (Washington and Lee Univ.), with a view of the College's antebellum buildings as well as a utility barn in the foreground and African-American onlookers present lower left. Late 19th century; 12 3/4" W x 9 1/2" H.

2nd Item: Early 20th C. silver-gelatin cabinet card print of Lee in uniform, 3/4 length standing, from an 1864 full-length photograph by J. Vannerson in his studio in Richmond, VA, where Lee had reluctantly posed for a series of portraits [Meredith 47]. Image: 7 " H x 5" W. Card: 10 " H x 8" W.

3rd Item: CDV albumen print on cardstock of Robert E. Lee, a photograph of an unknown but skilled artist's drawing of J. Vannerson's 3/4 profile portrait, but rendered in much lighter tones than the original, marked "Cook Richmond, Va." to front lower card. Overall 6 1/2" H x 4/14" W.

4th-6th Items: Silver gelatin on paper prints of Mathew Brady's April 1865 photographs of Lee in Richmond after his surrender at Appomattox, likely from Brady's original negatives, as upon Brady's death he passed down his immense body of work to his apprentice and nephew, Levin C. Handy. Three large 8x10's, sharply printed with a rich separation of tonal values, show Lee standing in full length pose, seated in profile, and again seated with his son General George Washington Custis Lee standing on his right, and Colonel Walter Taylor to his left. Stamped en verso with "L.C. Handy Studios 494 MD. Ave. S.W. Washington, D.C." ca. 1st quarter 20th C. 9 5/8" H x 8" W.

7th Item: 19th C. albumen print on card of an unknown artist's rendition of the Minnis & Cowell 1863 photograph of Lee standing, the photo that appeared in the July 2, 1864 edition of Harper's Weekly as an engraving; Image 7 1/4" H x 5 1/4" W; Card 9 1/2" H x 7 3/4" W.

8th Item: Oval albumen print after Tesselin's engraving of L. M. D. Guillaume's painting of Lee on the Field of Battle, mounted to card stock with printed oval rings and "General R. E. Lee" beneath image, unknown maker. Image 7" H x 5" W, Card 10" H x 8" W.

9th Item: Silver gelatin print on heavy paper of Michael Miley's full length, 3/4 portrait of Lee taken in 1868-69 in Boude and Miley's Lexington studio, sepia-toned monochrome, 10" H x 8" W.

PROVENANCE: By descent from the estate of Stanley Horn, Nashville, Tennessee.
