Description
Stephen Robin (1944-2018)
Scroll
Circa 1980
The plaster casting by Cranbrook Academy of Art graduate Stephen Robin depicts a woman in classical motif (his first girlfriend) surrounded by balding, middle-aged, airborne putti - each one a self-portrait of the artist.
During an exhibition at Rosenfeld Gallery in Philadelphia, the artist's home town, Stephen Robin, standing next to this sculpture, talks about Scroll: 'This piece I'm standing in front of is called Scroll. The title emphasizes the architectural ornamental feature of it and it also has putti, which are three little angels which are also self portraits. They're me. It has very high very low relief put together. That was on purpose.'
The video of this 2011 retrospective is easily found online.
The artist's thoroughly impressive resume at StephenRobin.com lists his more than seventy-five group and solo exhibitions, fifteen monumental public installations around the U.S., and hundreds of more entries from museum holdings to grants and awards.
The artist's 14 foot long installation Lily and Rose near the Reagan Building in Washington D.C., known as the Federal Triangle Flowers, appears twice in Minority Report, the 2002 Tom Cruise film directed by Steven Spielberg.
Measures 44.5 x 33.5 inches.
Provenance: The private collection of a Kansas City architect downsizing her home.
