Item Details
Description
Attributed to Claudio Jimenez Quispe (Peruvian, b. 1959). Crucifix, wood and potato plaster, ca. 1998 CE. Labels attributing artist with year on verso. An impressively ornate depiction of the Crucifixion carved from wood with the figures made from wires and covered with a plaster mixed with potatoes - the starchy vegetables form a solid medium to paint with tempera once dry. At the center is Christ, crowned with thorns and bloody from the Passion as he is surrounded by white roses and Arma Christi or Instruments of the Passion, such as a lance, a sponge on a pole for vinegar, and a ladder. Above him is a dove representing the Holy Spirit, as well as group of musicians and dancers on each arm of the cross flanking the Titulus crusis "INRI" and a rooster at the very top, intended as the cock that crowed after Peter's third denial of Christ. Size: 2.7" L x 16.5" W x 21.1" H (6.9 cm x 41.9 cm x 53.6 cm)

The penitent and impenitent thieves are beneath the Savior - the former on His right and latter on His left (an inscription above each identifying them) - with a scene of Santiago Matamoros and the skull and crossbones between them. A pair of cross necklaces made from nickel brass and nickel iron alloy hang from each arm of the crucifix.
