Kees van Dongen (1877–1968) was a Dutch-French painter and one of the leading figures of Fauvism, an early 20th-century art movement. He was born on January 26, 1877, in Rotterdam, Netherlands.Van Dongen initially worked as a draftsman for a newspaper in his hometown. In 1899, he moved to Paris, where he became associated with the avant-garde art scene. He became friends with prominent artists such as Henri Matisse and André Derain, both of whom were key figures in the Fauvist movement.Fauvism, characterized by its bold use of color and brushwork, aimed to evoke emotions and express the artist's subjective experience rather than adhere to realistic representation.
