He was born in Mâcon, France, on October 21, 1790, and passed away in Paris on February 28, 1869. He became well-known for his poetry in Méditations poétiques (1820), which made him a prominent member of the Romantic movement in French literature. His Histoire des Girondins gained widespread acclaim in 1847, and he gained significant political notoriety when he briefly commanded the Second Republic in the beginning of 1848.
