Description
Carlo Bugatti (Italian, 1856-1940), c.1880, a pair of impressive and important walnut doors, the tops with fretted crenellations over a Moorish arch, centred with two repoussé and pierced copper medallions, set within a surround inlaid with bronze and pewter in stylised motifs of leaves and berries, the lower medallion hung with a silk tassel, the doors flanked on either side by bronze columns with repoussé detailing, 119cm wide 18cm deep 259cm high The doors came from a cabinet, designed by Carlo Bugatti for his sister Luigia Pierina Bugatti, or 'Bice' as she was commonly known, likely on the occasion of her wedding, for which he designed a suite of furniture which is amongst his earliest known works.
