Description
England. Circa 1860.
This case was stamped with various wax seals (54 in all) while the sealing wax was hot and soft. The areas around the seals consist of a pattern made with ball-shaped stamps. The interior is lined with thin cardboard and red paper.
Sealing wax becomes very hard and glossy when cooled, resembling gutta percha in look and feel. We have seen cases like this erroneously described as being made of gutta percha. Few cases of this type were made and very few have survived in this fine condition as they were usually discarded when damaged from use.
SIZE: 4 1/4" x 2 7/8" x 5/8" (11 cm x 7.5 cm x 1.5 cm)
PROVENANCE: New York State collection.
CONDITION: Very good condition with no damage or losses to the exterior. Cardboard liner with sone wear, as pictured.
