Description
Pre-Columbian Chancay Culture painted wood figure with inlaid stone eyes. Peru, 900 - 1200 AD. Cylindrical body with flattened head and bottom. Body carved inward at the chin to delineate the shape of the head. Inset eyes with straight horizontal brow and vertical, flattened nose. Small chips of turquoise inlaid as eyes and mouth. Remnants of white paint overall, and a single black band around the torso. Small wool remnants on the top of the head.
PROVENANCE: San Francisco ethnographic / antiquities collection.
Height: 6 1/4 " (16 cm)
Diameter: 1 3/4 ” (4.5 cm)
CONDITION: Erosion to the wood and wear to the surfaces. Wear to the paint. Overall smooth darkened patina.
