Brothers-in-Law in Tennessee Sell their Interest in Young Slave

In his will signed on June 1, 1832, Stephen Brooks gave all five of his slaves (including Caswell) to his wife Mary Terrell Brooks during her lifetime. At her death, he wanted the slaves to be sold at public auction "in one lot that they not be separated" and the proceeds divided among their nine children including Thomas Brooks and Mahala L. Odell, wife of Murphy Odell.

With this bill of sale, Thomas Brooks and Murphy Odell sold their interest in the enslaved boy named Caswell to William Jackson.

Know all men by these presents that we Thomas Brooks and Murphy Odle of the County of Madison and State of Tennessee of the one part and William Jackson of aforesaid County and State of the other part [Witnesseth?] that for and in consideration of the sum of Sixty-six dollars and sixty-six ? cents to us in hand paid in receipt whereof we hereby acknowledge doth hereby sell and convey to the said William Jackson all our right title claim or interest that we have in a certain boy slave named Caswell the son of Hannah formerly the property of Philip Hartsaw of North Carolina and given by him to Stephen Brooks deceased of Maury County and state aforesaid and given in his will to his children share alike the right and title whereof we warrant and defend against all claims given under our hands and seals this 4 day November 1839
